Electric cars (generally known as electric vehicles) are fast gaining ground hence we bring you all the facts you need to know about electric cars.

In the case, if you haven’t known, according to the manufacturers of electric cars or electric vehicles (EVs), these cars use little to no fuel and pollute the environment less compared to conventional ones. They, therefore, help reduce climate change and allow people to save money on fuel.

Battery electric cars: (BECs)

These run entirely on electricity stored in a battery and are recharged at stations at home, work, or on the road. They have an operating range of 60+ miles and take about six to eight hours to recharge at 220 volts.

Plug-in hybrid electric cars: (PHECs)

The PHECs run on both electricity and petrol and can be plugged in for a charge. The ranges of these cars vary but usually run between 10 and 40 miles before the vehicle operates as a hybrid.

  • They use small electric batteries and internal combustion engines.

  • Their batteries are charged by engines or power grids.
  • Their mileage range is 40 per charge.

Neighbourhood Electric Cars (NECs)

  • They use batteries that are recharged from a 120-volt grid.
  • Their maximum speed is 30mph.

Non-Road EVs (NREVs) (Non-Road Vehicles)

  • They use rechargeable batteries and electric motors.
  • They are designed for manufacturing plants, seaports, and airports.

Advertisers of electric cars often focus on the good environmental and social benefits they have, or even the terrific gas mileage you get compared to gas vehicles.

Electric cars have instant torque. Once you press their accelerator, you immediately get torque. Electric motors create peak torque at Zero RPM and that’s why you tend to get full power once you press down the accelerator pedal.

This basically means that if you are in an idle position (when the car is not moving) and you press on the accelerator, the electric motors give an immediate torque to the car, as opposed to a typical petrol/diesel car that doesn’t produce high torque until it reaches higher RPMs.

The only maintenance you need to do in an electric car includes, rotating tires, changing brake fluid and changing AC filter. The only wearable items that need changing are the brake pads, windscreen wipers and the tires.

Most electric cars have brake pads that are controlled by an electric motor, which generates power for the battery from braking. This also increases the lifespan of the brake pads, when compared to non-hybrid/electric cars.

Most modern electric cars come with a minimum of 8 years warranty, so you don’t need to worry about the batteries for a minimum of eight years.

Efficiency Of ECs:

Electric cars are considered to be 3 times more efficient than petrol-powered vehicles. According to a study, 33% of the energy created by an internal combustion engine goes out through the exhaust.

This means that 33% of the energy is wasted; an electric car eliminates such loss of energy. You have a gain of the 33% in energy because electric cars have no exhaust.

Electric vehicles also have 50% of their energy saved due to the less frictional losses when compared to petrol or diesel-powered cars.

About Charging Conveniences: Electric Cars

In North America and Europe, you can get your car charged at your home and at workplaces instead of going to petrol stations.

In Pakistan however, the trend of electric cars is slowly growing. BMW recently launched its first charging point in Lahore, we can expect more charging points or centres in major cities in the coming years.

Prices Are Getting Low:

There are cheap ECs around the £16k mark and others that are more expensive but still affordable alternatives to petrol/diesel cars.

And don’t forget electric cars cost less to run over the lifetime of the car than a petrol or diesel model… if you put all that into consideration it will still amount to electric cars costing less.

Economical Value:

In Europe and North America, if you own an electric car, you are exempted from certain government taxes, which adds to your personal savings. Leasing an electric car in the US is as cheap as $200 per month without any initial deposits.

In Pakistan, the charges and taxes on importing an electric car are relatively less than that of normal petrol and diesel cars.

Electric cars are gaining popularity in Pakistan. They are not only better for the environment but also help one to save a lot of money.

Infrastructure Is Still Holding ECs Back

It takes a long time to charge an electric car right now, and a lot of volts to speed up the process. Currently, most chargers are Level 2 and can be found with Plug-share. Some are free, some cost money for the electricity used, and others cost per hour. Many are run by a charging system network such as ChargePoint or SemaConnect.

There’s a movement to get an Open Charge Point Protocol for communication between EV charging stations and a central management network, much like our mobile phone networks.

Though the concept began in the Netherlands and is widely adopted in Europe and Asia, it is not in the US because the market here came into being through the Department of Energy.

The network providers in the US manufactured the charging stations, so there wasn’t a huge incentive to be a part of OCPP. The open standard could increase innovation and be more economically beneficial in the long-term.
